The team principal of Toyota Gazoo Racing WRT, Jari-Matti Latvala, is talking about the tarmac test his team scheduled before the start of Croatia Rally and expresses his opinion on the 2025-spec Yaris and the Yaris Rally2.
The Japanese team brought two Yarises on their pre-event test for Croatia Rally and Sebastien Ogier, Elfyn Evans and Takamoto Katsuta had the chance to spend time inside the 2025-spec Yaris apart from their regular test with the current Yaris Rally1. The WRC teams are pushing FIA to clarify the new regulations as soon as possible in order to start building and developing its new cars as only seven months remaining until the start of the new season. The new WRC rules include the removal of the hybrid units from the current Rally1 cars and the reduction of the air restrictor and the aerodynamics, but more details are set to be announced on the next World Motor Council which will be held in June. However, it must be mentioned that a meeting took place in Geneva a month ago where FIA and the representative people from the WRC teams discussed about the future of WRC.
"What I can tell you is that, for us, it’s a big step down from the Rally1 with the modifications, what you had to do", Latvala said.
"And for the Rally2 car, small step up.
"I think it’s difficult to bring these two cars to the same class.
"If you think about the Rally1 car, how it’s developed, all the aerodynamics is designed to be for the rear spoiler and how the sides of the car is tied in the air flow to the rear spoiler.
"When you remove the rear spoiler and put the smaller one in, it’s not that simple.
"The rear geometry of the car doesn’t necessarily work at all the way it’s designed to be.
"And that’s why all this would need work and testing.
"And it’s so much easier for everybody if we would just go in a way that we don’t change too much".
