FIA opens probe after rock smashes WRC2 car windscreen in Greece

The FIA has opened an investigation after a rock smashed the windscreen of Alejandro Cachón's Toyota GR Yaris Rally2 during Friday's leg of the EKO Acropolis Rally Greece, raising fresh concerns over competitor safety.

The incident happened on the Thiva special stage when the Spanish driver was travelling at high speed. The rock struck the co-driver's side of the windscreen, causing significant damage but allowing Cachón and co-driver Borja Rozada to continue without injury.

While the exact cause has yet to be determined, onboard footage has prompted speculation that the rock may have originated from outside the road, leading the FIA and event organisers to begin a formal investigation.

"It was a huge impact," Cachón said after the stage. "I don't know exactly what happened, but I hope it wasn't intentional. The most important thing is that we're both OK."

Despite the dramatic moment, Cachón continued his charge in WRC2, demonstrating remarkable composure to remain among the category's front-runners.

In a statement issued after the stage, the FIA confirmed that it is gathering information together with the organisers of the Acropolis Rally to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident. Any further action will depend on the findings of the investigation.

The episode has once again highlighted the importance of spectator safety and responsible behavior at rally events, where fans are often positioned close to the stages. Organisers are expected to review all available evidence before reaching any conclusions.
