The FIA has unveiled fresh visuals of the upcoming WRC27 Rally1 concept, offering the first real look at what the next generation of World Rally Championship cars could look like in action. This reveal follows the recent approval of the WRC27 technical regulations by the FIA’s World Motor Sport Council.
The new concept represents how the updated rules will be applied in practice, showing a simplified aerodynamic design compared to the current generation of Rally1 cars. Beneath the bodywork, the car will use a Rally2-derived 1.6-litre turbocharged engine paired with double wishbone suspension, replacing the existing MacPherson strut setup.
One of the most significant changes is the return of the Rally1 nameplate, which will now apply to these next-generation cars even though the underlying technical package has evolved significantly from the current Rally1 formula.
The new visual concept also highlights the continued use of a tubular spaceframe chassis for safety, a philosophy carried over and refined from the current Rally1 cars. The FIA’s improvements focus on reducing complexity and cost while increasing occupant protection.
Under the revised regulations, constructors — including both traditional manufacturers and independent tuners — will have more design flexibility within defined parameters, allowing a range of body shapes to be developed around the safety cell. Simplified aerodynamics and the use of Rally2-based components aim to make top-level rallying more accessible and less costly for competitors.
