The key to Evans's success is to get rid of his overthinking, according to Latvala

The team principal of Toyota Gazoo Racing WRT, Jari-Matti Latvala, believes that Elfyn Evans can be successful in 2023 if he stops overthinking too much and can understand the reason why his driver does not feel confident with the hybrid Yaris in comparison with the last year's.

The Welshman joined Toyota back in 2020 and was able to fight against his teammate Sebastien Ogier for the drivers' championship for two seasons. But since World Rally Championship entered to hybrid era, Evans struggled to find confidence with the GR Yaris Rally1 resulting in making some mistakes during the 2022 season after pushing too much. However, it must be mentioned that FIA has changed the sporting regulations before the start of 2022 and now the WRC teams offer a few options on the car Rally1 set-ups in comparison with the cars of 2021 which means that some drivers must adapt their driving styles even though they are not feel comfortable with their car.

"Elfyn, technically he knows really really well, everything about the car", Latvala said.

"He’s very analytic.

"Before Rally Japan we talked to him, and yes, he’s not been able to have the same confidence with this car this year as the last year’s car because there’s been less options to do the setup for the car because there’s more limitations.

"But I think here he proved he has the speed.

"It’s just he needs to keep the shoulders relaxed.

"I think that is the more important part.

"You can get too much thinking.

"That’s the point I think.

"And he has everything to be successful next year".
