Hyundai must close the gap to Toyota in terms of speed

The team principal of Hyundai Motorsport, Cyril Abiteboul, says that his team must find something to close the gap from Toyota as he sees that they are missing two or three tenths per kilometer.

Kalle Rovanpera dominated on Saturday stages and headed to the final day of Rally de Portugal with a 57,5-second gap over the second Dani Sordo. Hyundai drivers could not match his times and this can be proved by the fact that the reigning WRC Champion set the fastest time in ten from 19 stages in Portugal in compared to the Hyundai trio who won only five stages with Thierry Neuville not being able to take a stage win last weekend. The next WRC round will be held in Sardinia where the Alzenau-based team is traditionally performing well there as they have won six times this event since their return in WRC.

"The car is there, we know Kalle is a very quick driver and when he’d made the gap of one minute at the end of Saturday, it was very difficult for us to come back on that", Abiteboul said.

"To me, that’s too big of a gap to be satisfied.

"We need to see how we can get something like two tenths or three tenths of a second per kilometre on this car, which is not an easy job.

"The car is a solid all-round car, but we'd like to make it one more step.

"We’ve got some ideas, it's about the execution of those ideas now that we need to accelerate".
