Mikkelsen clarifies his current situation with Hyundai after their backstory in 2022

Andreas Mikkelsen is still interested in getting behind the wheel of the Hyundai i20N Rally1 this year and believes that the Koreans did not owe him a drive with their car.

After Ott Tanak's and Oliver Solberg's departures from Hyundai Motorsport last year, the Alzenau-based team examined its options for their driver line-up for this season. Kris Meeke and Andreas Mikkelsen were among the potential drivers for the i20N seat, but eventually Esapekka Lappi and Craig Breen were confirmed meaning that Andreas Mikkelsen lost his chance to renew his contract with Toksport. This is the reason why the Norwegian started late his season in 2023 as Toksport and Skoda Motorsport had already confirmed their line-up since last December while Gus Greensmith's WRC2 campaign with the Fabia RS was announced one month later.

"I think most of the drivers have said that they’re interested", Mikkelsen said.

"Of course I’m one of them, but so far there’s no news regarding that.

"But I’m sure they have time, they want to see what is the best option for the future.

"Well, I would not call it ‘owe it’, but yeah, I was guaranteed something last year.

"In the end it didn’t happen.

"Of course that was with the other management so new guys now and yeah, I don’t think they owe me anything.

"I just need to drive as good as I can and if that is a possibility for me to drive that car of course I would love to, but I’m sure a lot of drivers would!".
