Rovanpera surprised by the third place despite his clever Sardinia run

Kalle Rovanpera is surprised by the fact that he finished at the top three last weekend as he reveals that Rally Italia Sardegna does not suit him.

The reigning WRC Champion finished at the lowest place of the podium in Sardinia last weekend and took advantage of his rivals' retirements and problems, such as the time loss of Elfyn Evans and Sebastien Ogier's and Ott Tanak's retirements. In general, he was the only Rally1 driver who stayed out of trouble all the weekend and managed to move up to third from eight overall. His job was not easy in Sardinia as he had to open the roads on Friday and dropped many seconds on the two passes from Monte Lerno which was the longest stage of the rally with almost 50 competitive kilometers. After the end of the sixth round, the young Finn extended his championship lead to 25 points due to the fact that he was the fastest driver in Powerstage which means that he took the five bonus points from that stage.

"I think it is a bit of a surprise", Rovanpera said about his third place.

"I was not really hoping much from the weekend, from a rally which I don’t like in the calendar really at all.

"So it has always been a big struggle for me here.

"It just does not suit me so well.

"So definitely, I am quite happy how it came out at the end.

"Definitely the weather was helping us but still we lost a big chunk of time on the Monte Lerno on Friday when it was dry and after that we still have been trying to fight back a bit in places and also being clever to get the places that we can, let’s say staying there and waiting if something happens.

"We could not really fight back much, but I think we did a good job".
