Toyota Gazoo Racing has taken an important step toward the 2027 World Rally Championship by running its future WRC car in test sessions in Portugal, marking one of the first public sightings of the new machine.
Although still heavily camouflaged, the prototype appears to be significantly different in size and design from the current GR Yaris Rally1, hinting at major changes under the new regulations that the WRC will introduce in 2027. It was seen alongside the existing Rally1 car as the team prepared for the upcoming Safari Rally Kenya, the third round of the current World Rally Championship season.
According to the article, the new Toyota will likely use a Rally2-based mechanical platform, including the familiar 3-cylinder engine, but with a completely redesigned body and components to comply with the 2027 technical rules.
So far, Toyota is one of the only manufacturers known to be actively developing a 2027 WRC car, with another entrant — the Belgian Project Rally One team — also expected to produce a contender under the new regulations.
