The final round of the 2026 FIA World Rally Championship could be heading for a major change, with Saudi Arabia potentially being replaced by Portugal.
The Rally Saudi Arabia is currently scheduled to take place from November 12 to 15, marking the second appearance of the event on the WRC calendar. However, growing uncertainty surrounding the organization of the rally has raised doubts over whether it will go ahead as planned. The FIA has officially given itself until September to make a final decision, although logistical considerations could force a decision earlier.
According to information reported by AutoHebdo, if the Saudi Arabian round cannot be organized, the FIA would look for another gravel event to replace it. The leading candidate at this stage appears to be the Rally Six Cities North of Portugal, which is already scheduled to serve as the final round of the European Rally Championship (ERC) from October 23 to 25.
Portugal would therefore offer a logical alternative, given its long-standing rallying tradition and extensive experience in hosting international-level events. The country is already a well-established part of the WRC calendar, with the Rally de Portugal featuring fast and demanding gravel stages that have consistently provided spectacular competition.
A change of venue would also have significant implications for the championship finale. Instead of concluding the season in the Middle East, the 2026 WRC campaign could finish on Portuguese gravel, potentially providing a very different sporting challenge for the drivers and teams.
For now, however, nothing has been officially confirmed. Saudi Arabia remains the scheduled destination for the WRC finale, while Portugal appears to be the strongest alternative should the event be cancelled. The coming weeks are therefore expected to be crucial, with the FIA's final decision likely to determine the shape of the 2026 championship finale.
