FIA confirms two-year Rally2 transition plan for WRC’s premier category

The World Motor Sport Council (WMSC) has approved the technical regulations that will underpin the FIA World Rally Championship’s top category from 2027, alongside homologation rules that will allow eligible Rally2 cars to compete in the premier class during the opening years of the championship’s new regulatory era.

The objective of the new framework is to increase the number of cars capable of competing at the front of the field, enhancing the spectacle for fans as the WRC27 regulations come into force.

A key element of the package is the introduction of the Rally2-WRC Kit, which can be fitted to Rally2 cars homologated before 31 December 2026. These upgraded Rally2 cars will be eligible to compete alongside the new-generation WRC27 machinery in the FIA World Rally Championship’s top category during the 2027 and 2028 seasons.

The Rally2-WRC Kit has been designed to deliver greater aerodynamic parity between existing Rally2 cars and the forthcoming WRC27 models. The package will include homologated front fenders, a revised front bumper and a rear aerodynamic device, with costs capped at €7,500.

Homologation of the Rally2-WRC Kit will be restricted to manufacturers registered in the FIA World Rally Championship as constructors. During the first year of homologation, manufacturers will be required to contest every event on the WRC calendar and field a minimum of two cars at each rally.

The regulations also establish the technical parameters for Rally2-WRC Kit cars, including a minimum weight of 1,220kg. Each kit will be permitted a single bodywork “joker” update covering components homologated as part of the package, while only one Rally2-WRC Kit extension will be allowed per Rally2 homologation form throughout the 2027–2028 period.

Eligibility for Rally2-WRC Kit cars in the championship’s top category will expire on 31 December 2028, creating a clearly defined two-year transition period as the WRC27 regulations are introduced.

The new framework is intended to strengthen competition at the highest level of the championship during the early years of the WRC27 era, enabling upgraded Rally2 cars to compete directly against the new-generation WRC machinery.
