Rally Sweden faces a financial crisis as its future hangs in the balance

Rally Sweden, one of the most iconic events in the World Rally Championship, is facing a serious financial crisis that threatens its future.

According to reports by Värmlands Folkblad, the company responsible for organising the rally, Rally Sweden AB, is on the brink of bankruptcy after accumulating significant debts over several years. The company has reportedly recorded a deficit of approximately 16 million Swedish kronor, equivalent to around €1.5 million. For years, financial support from the municipality of Umeå has helped keep the event running. However, concerns have grown after it emerged that funding intended for future editions has been used to cover debts from previous rallies. The municipality provides approximately 14.5 million kronor in annual support, but this funding has not been enough to resolve the underlying financial problems.

The situation has also exposed serious management issues within the organisation. Several board members have resigned, criticising the company's financial management and the lack of sufficient business expertise. Furthermore, negotiations with a group of potential investors from Umeå collapsed in September, leaving the rally without a new owner and making its long-term future even more uncertain.

Despite these difficulties, Rally Sweden remains a major event for Swedish motorsport and an important part of the WRC calendar. First held in 1950, the rally has built a strong international reputation, particularly for its spectacular snow-covered stages and unique winter conditions. Its importance extends beyond sport, bringing tourism, international attention and economic activity to the host region.

Nevertheless, the 2027 edition could prove to be a decisive turning point. According to those involved in the discussions, the event may still be capable of operating profitably, but significant changes to its management and financial structure will be necessary. Greater cost control, improved transparency and a sustainable funding model will be essential if Rally Sweden is to overcome its current difficulties.

"It became clear that we were not good at running companies", Dicksdotter Hermansson (a former board member of Rally Sweden AB) said to the newspaper.

"We simply did not have sufficient expertise.

"The figures in the financial statements also demonstrate that.

"Rally Sweden’s deficit of 16 million kronor is completely unreasonable.

"The federation represents 16 motorsport disciplines.

"It is a sporting organisation, and one discipline cannot be favoured in a way that leaves the others paying its costs.

"The line has to be drawn somewhere".
