The WRT Rally1 Spain project continues to make progress as RMC Motorsport and the Royal Spanish Automobile Federation (RFEDA) step up development of their new car, which is being built with the aim of competing in the FIA World Rally Championship’s top category under the WRC27 regulations.
Following months of intensive technical work, the Spanish project is gradually taking shape, with the team focusing on the design, engineering and optimisation of the various components that will form the new car. The development process requires considerable attention to detail, as every element must meet the demanding performance, safety, efficiency and reliability standards required at the highest level of international rallying.
One example of the work involved is the development of the car’s bespoke lighting system. Far from being just a functional component, the headlights represent a complex engineering project that brings together aerodynamics, structural design, technology and the visual identity of the future WRC27 contender. More than 700 hours of engineering work have been dedicated to their development, covering the design of the housings, aerodynamic studies, integration of the optical systems and preparation of the necessary requirements for FIA homologation.
One of the main challenges for the engineering team has been to achieve an extremely lightweight construction without compromising structural rigidity. To meet this target, the headlights feature housings made entirely from fibreglass, a solution designed to reduce overall weight while providing the strength required to withstand the demanding conditions of World Rally Championship competition.
Aerodynamics has also been a key consideration throughout the design process. The shape of the headlights is the result of extensive studies into airflow around the front of the car, meaning their geometry has been determined by much more than aesthetic considerations. Instead, they form an integral part of the vehicle’s overall aerodynamic concept, helping to manage airflow and ensure that the different elements of the front-end design work together efficiently.
The development of the lighting system highlights the technical complexity of the WRT Rally1 Spain project and the level of detail being invested in the construction of the new car. With RMC Motorsport and RFEDA continuing to work towards their WRC27 debut, the next major step will be the release of the first images showing the vehicle’s exterior design, alongside the announcement of its official name. These details are expected to offer a clearer picture of the identity of Spain’s new challenger as preparations for the 2027 season continue.
