Lappi to return in WRC with Toyota only for Rally Finland

According to DirtFish.com, Esapekka Lappi is expected to drive the fifth Yaris WRC of Toyota on this year's Rally Finland.

The Japanese team is expected to confirm this information at the end of this week with Lappi joining the four regular drivers of Toyota (Sebastien Ogier, Elfyn Evans, Kalle Rovanpera, Takamoto Katsuta).

Lappi started his WRC career in 2017 with Toyota Gazoo Racing WRT having Tommi Makkinen as his boss and Jari-Matti Latvala, Juho Hanninen and Ott Tanak as his teammates.

In fact, he clinched his maiden win in WRC with Toyota in his home event back in 2017 having given a hard fight with his compatriot, Latvala, for the win.

After two successful seasons in Toyota, Lappi left the Japanese squad and he joined Citroen in 2019 for two years.

However, Citroen withdrew from WRC at the end of 2019, so Lappi joined M-Sport Ford in 2020, but he struggled a lot with the behaviour of Ford Fiesta WRC.

He did not manage to come to an agreement with a WRC team this year, so he participated in two events in WRC2 category (Rally Portugal, Arctic Rally Finland) with the private team Movisport and its car, Volkswagen Polo GTI R5.

Finally, it must be mentioned that Lappi is one of the three potential canditates for a Toyota seat next season as Sebastien Ogier will be a part-timer.
