Hyundai's priority being the Rally1 car reliability for 2022

The team principal of Hyundai Motorsport, Andrea Adamo, admits that the No.1 priority of the team is to have a reliable car for 2022 and that the prototype car was used for testing is far away from the car will be used for next year.

The Korean team completed its simulation tests with a prototype i20N Rally1 car in Italy earlier this week with the intention of preparaning its car for 2022.

In this test, Thierry Neuville, Ott Tanak and Dani Sordo drove this prototype car in the roads of Italy and in fact the test was held at night as well.

It must be mentioned that Hyundai Motorsport received the green light from Hyundai in Korea for 2022 at the last minute, therefore it got left behind in comparison with M-Sport and Toyota that have already tested their hybrid cars.

"You are seeing things in a different perspective than I am", Adamo said.

"We started much behind the others, so what we are doing is finding a different way to be ready in Monte Carlo.

"Because more than ever, we think that reliability is the thing you have to have with these kind of cars.

"And we already learned the hard way this year that without reliability you cannot win a rally.

"So we believe in the learning process, and it’s why we did this prototype – and it really was a prototype – in this moment.

"To chase the final performance with a car that is far away from the one that will be in Monte Carlo, which we will start to test in 10 days, would have been good but also a bit of a waste of time.

"For me, it’s important to collect the maximum amount of performance and experience with this one in order to make the new one properly, and this is the ultimate target for us".
