Ott Tanak says that his triumph in Greece is due to the facts that he avoided punctures by pushing in the sections with minimal risk and holding back in the rougher places.
Tanak secured the first win of Hyundai Motorsport for this season and finished at the top step of the podium in Greece by avoiding unnecessary risks. He was second overall at the end of Stage 2 as he suffered from a front left tyre damage there, but he attacked on Friday afternoon and managed to steal Sebastien Ogier's lead. A rear spoiler damage in Stage 9 did not affect his performance and won eight stages in total. However, a gearbox issue hit him in Powerstage and lost the chance to score the maximum points on SuperSunday standings and in PS, but he left from Greece with 30 points. He is third overall on the championship, just 12 and three points behind Elfyn Evans and Sebastien Ogier respectively, but he will start second on the road on Friday at his home event.
"It was a great weekend but it was also incredibly demanding", Tanak said.
"The temperatures and the length of the rally were massive obstacles, but we were very happy to put a winning package together, keep the tyres alive and demonstrate our performance.
"Since Saturday morning we were able to control the pace, I felt good in the car and it was working really well in these conditions.
"We avoided punctures all weekend by pushing in the sections with minimal risk and holding back in the rougher places, and that was the key.
"Overall, we are very happy to claim our first win at Acropolis in these conditions".
