Takamoto Katsuta and Sami Pajari are undoubtedly two of the drivers who have impressed the WRC audience most with their performances so far this season, but the paths of the two Toyota drivers share some remarkable similarities.
First of all, both are Toyota drivers competing at the highest level of the WRC, with Katsuta having been part of the team's top-level programme for considerably longer than Pajari. However, both drivers managed to claim their maiden WRC victories in the GR Yaris Rally1 this year, and both went on to score back-to-back wins.
Remarkably, both had already stood on the podium seven times before finally achieving the result every WRC driver dreams of: reaching the top step of the podium. Both drivers have also taken victories and led rallies following retirements by their rivals, making their breakthrough successes even more significant.
Perhaps the most impressive similarity, however, is that both managed to secure consecutive victories with Toyota. Katsuta first triumphed at Safari Rally Kenya before following it up with another win at Rally Croatia. Pajari, meanwhile, claimed his maiden WRC victory in Estonia before making history at Rally Finland by becoming the 200th Finnish driver to win his home event.
Equally important is the fact that both drivers are emerging talents who are now firmly among the contenders for the WRC title. After ten rounds of the 2026 season, Katsuta and Pajari sit inside the championship's top three, setting the stage for an intense battle between the two Toyota stars over the remaining rallies.
With Elfyn Evans having built a significant advantage at the top of the standings, the fight behind him could become just as fascinating. Katsuta and Pajari have already shown that they have the speed and consistency to challenge for victories, and their remarkably similar rise makes their championship battle one of the most intriguing stories of the remainder of the season.
