The team principal of M-Sport Ford, Richard Millener, says that it is very unlikely for his team to upgrade their current Fiesta Rally2 car as it prefers to build a new car for 2027.
FIA had announced a ten-year stability in terms of the regulations which will start from 2027. Moreover, it is up to the manufacturers to decide with which type of car wants to compete meaning that it is possible to see a SUV running against a saloon. Furthermore, the manufacturers can decide if their cars will be ICE, electric or hybrid. However, the question mark is how the WRC27 cars will differentiate from the current Rally2 cars as the first ones will use the same engine, brakes and gearbox as the Rally2 cars. According to FIA, the WRC27 cars will be different from Rally2 cars in terms of their weight and their engine output. Finally, the rules define a zone in which all of the bodywork panels must be located.
"It [upgrading the Rally2 car] is a sticking plaster if you ask me", Millener said.
"That is not the future.
"Why would we waste a year trying to up spec our Rally2 car and then do a new car?
"It is only Toyota there for the first half of the year, so I don’t understand how we are going to introduce that yet.
"It is an option, but I’d much rather invest our time and money in a new car that has a long life span".
