Thierry Neuville reveals that his Hyundai i20N Rally1 carried a driveshaft issue which led him to go off the road at the Shakedown.
The Belgian driver finished outside the top ten at the Shakedown session as he passed only once from that stage. A video showed Neuville going off the road with the front right of his car resulting in damaging the suspension. However, he revealed that his i20N suffered from a driveshaft issue which possibly damaged the front right suspension. This problem led him to go off the road and to clip a bank. Hyundai is going to investigate this issue in order to clarify the cause of the incident and to assure that the team has solved this problem as Esapekka Lappi and Ott Tanak had previously faced the same issue.
"It was a chaotic start for us", Neuville said.
"We had a driveshaft issue at the beginning of the stage.
"While we were driving slowly, trying to just drive out of the stage, we had a suspension failure.
"Caused or not by the driveshaft, I don’t know yet. I need to speak to the team, they are analyzing.
"Maybe the driveshaft started to flap and it cut the wishbone, so we need to find out.
"Obviously the footage is very visible.
"We are driving slowly and suddenly the car pulls me into the ditch.
"So it came a bit of a surprise".
